Baby, It’s Cold Outside

by Laurel ~ December 7th, 2008

John Deere-O-Meter

John Deere-O-Meter

Outside the kitchen window, the John Deere-O-Meter*, which among other things measures the wind velocity, is flapping relentlessly. The hanging chimes, the sound of which I generally enjoy, are almost at the point of annoying. It is cold, very cold and windy and it is only the beginning of December. This is the kind of day where I would like to not venture out, though I will ultimately need to do that at some point (grocery store).

Inside, where it is warm, I have been disassembling the only remaining cushion cover that came with the two chairs we recently acquired via Craigslist. Later today I hope to be cutting into the fabric for the new cushions and perhaps even experiment with the new sewing machine a bit. Hoping the knowledge base I have for sewing will adapt to the new machine easily enough.

Since I mentioned the new sewing machine, the Singer Confidence 7470, I must point you all to the blog of my husband Llewellyn, who wrote an amusing entry entitled “A Nerd’s Review of the Singer 7470.”  It made me laugh and you may also enjoy it.

Have a comfortably warm day!

It’s a day for cocoa and soup. :P I used to love curling up near a window and appreciating the warmth of the house and a cup of really good cocoa when looking outside.

Actually, it’s cool here, although I still have windows open. But soup will likely be made tonight.

The Deere-O-Meter is pretty neat. It was a present from my Sister & Brother-in-law, continuing on a theme they picked up on when, anticipating the impending lawn-mowing and snow shoveling responsibilities, we acquired a John Deere X324 tractor back in June as the first new house accessory. The tractor has worked out very well so far — I recently disconnected the lawn mulcher deck, mounted the snow blade, and am sitting by the window, praying for snow.

As for the Deere-O-Meter, it is quite entertaining and informative. I appreciate that, though the thermometer is hidden unless the wind is from the east, the rain gauge clearly indicates in all directions whether it is below freezing. (As you can see, it definitely is.)

For a multi-factor weather station, I like its lack of resource consumption — no electricity, no TCP/IP packets, totally off the grid — green in virtually every aspect. It is so well color coordinated I am tempted to mount it on my lawn tractor as a hood ornament. Then I could determine my airspeed, heading, and whether the rainfall dictates I should come in from the fields. (Mother never let me get a speedometer for my bike, saying it would just make me try to go faster. But don’t worry. The little JD has a rated top speed of only 5.5 MPH. At least until I get that aftermarket turbocharger next spring. The decal will say: “John Deere / No Fear”)
