Guest Room Furnishings: Armoire II

Antique Chinese Armoire

Antique Chinese Armoire

This is the second armoire we purchased, also from Harp Gallery in Appleton, Wisconsin. I found the piece, but It took a while for us to decide to buy — we ultimately we kept returning to the listing and finally gave in to the purchase with no regrets. I like the piece for the color and also for the obvious Asian design — hand painted images, gold highlights and the hardware. In addition to the shelves inside (and the ability to hide another television) it also offers two drawers.

Initially we purchased this piece thinking it would go well in what was the master bedroom. That room is huge and the wallpaper picks up on the red color of the paint. But because of the size of this piece and the fact we already had another tall Victorian mirrored dresser in the room it just felt overwhelming. Fortunately we buy online when there is more than one option available for placement and this armoire went into the front room with the painted ceiling perfectly. We are working off the Asian theme in this room, though we do not wish to overemphasize it either — this armoire is circa 1900 and in excellent shape.

Oddly, since purchasing this armoire, we have seen a number of them in local antique stores and for more than double what we paid. I have also seen them recently in catalogs, if I can find the catalog I am thinking of I’ll link it. All of the other similar pieces we have seen are monochrome, mostly in black, so I feel we have an interesting and unique piece.

A few weeks later I saw a small chest on eBay and purchased it — it will sit in the corner of the room flanked by two comfortable chairs when we find something we like that work with the color scheme. It is a Thomasville piece and I am estimating it to be 1970’s era. It has pleasantly ornate brass fittings and the antique brass Buddha lamp I found many years ago will look fabulous on it.

Which reminds me I need to learn how to recover the lamp shade (or find someone who can do it) on the Buddha lamp. It is original to the lamp and I like the shape, highly doubtful I could ever find another.
